What’s the secret to making as much money as you want in any business? What does it take to make money fast?
Hey everybody, today I wanted to get real and address a couple of questions I received from prospects thinking about joining my business, and the only way I know how to do that is to be straight up, honest, and basically share concepts that I’ve learned.
You know a lot of people only see the success that you have when you get it, but they don’t see the struggles and the pain you go through when you start.
They don’t see the falls you take, the pain you go through, the tears you cry or any of it, and by the time you do have success stories, they’re just stories.
When Quixtar launched in 1999, I was working security for a company in Research Triangle Park. I had gone from a regular rent-a-cop at the desk in the lobby, to being head of security for shipping and receiving, with my own office, computer and everything else.
I was approached by another employee who noticed how fast I was being promoted and he kept trying to introduce me to join him in this online “ground floor” business opportunity.
We’re talking about 1999; 16 years ago. The Internet was barely getting fired up. I mean Google still had BETA! under it’s name!
A lot of technologies were still taking baby steps, so the concept of a fully online company was crazy to me.
He kept after me and kept after me and after about the third or fourth time he wore me down and I said “Okay, I’ll go to a meeting and check it out.”
I was so excited by what I saw that I joined and I went after that business like that was it!
I did the weekly meetings, driving into town a couple times a week, I bought the books and listened to the tapes, and while I was out delivering furniture (one of my many different jobs during that time), I was drawing circles, showing the plan, and trying to get people to change their buying habits.
On another job I had (I was working as a cashier), I was always dressed in business casual because I was taught that when you’re prospecting you have to look a certain way for people to take you seriously.
If you can imagine this: a 6 foot 8 black guy with an Afro walking around from behind a cash register, just towering over everyone, to stopping customers to talk to them about income opportunities and goals and what my plan was, trying to set up meetings…
That was me. I was that guy, and I stuck with it through a lot of jobs I did because to me, the rent to own company, the cashier jobs, construction and everything else were the side jobs. This business was my full time job.
At events I stood and took pictures with leaders on my team, and saw the successes of others like Dexter Yager, Bill Britt, Mark and Peggy Yeh, and John and Jennie Belle Crowe, and I wanted a diamond ring of my own.
And I worked relentlessly. I never walked down the isles of Walmart or anything like others did, but I became a pro of what I call the $5.00 Pump Prospecting Strategy.
Every time I went to the gas station, I’d never fill up my car. I’d only ever put $5 bucks in gas so that I had to go put gas every couple of days. Now, while I was at the pump, I’d use that opportunity to strike up conversation and talk to the person on the other side of the pump.
For weeks I worked by butt off and about 90 days later I got my first check. I remember seeing that envelope and was so excited. I ran back inside, dropped the mail and tore open the envelope.
$17.50 cents. Immediately my heart sunk just disappointed. At first I thought something was wrong. I couldn’t believe it. Every free hour I had I was working the business and showing the plan.
I was buying the books and listening to the audios. I had recruited a lot of people, I was buying products from myself. I had spent several hundreds dollars on the business.
Where were the hundreds and thousands of dollars?
When I stopped going to the meetings and became inactive my sponsor (and I won’t say his name) called me up and told me he was getting out of the business. He went on to apply the sales he was using into his regular job and became a huge success.
Not long after that I got a call from one of the leaders above him and he invited me out to lunch. The goal was to see what they could do to get me back into the business, and after he promised to mentor me and be there when I had questions, I did.
I started going back out showing the plan and recruiting, then one day I needed help with something, so I called his cell phone and he told me to call his house phone because his battery was about to die.
I called his house phone and I thought I had the wrong number, because his wife answered the phone like it was a distribution company. I hung up, checked the number again.
I didn’t make a mistake dialing, because when I called again, his wife answered the same way, like it’s a distribution company. I thought it was really strange but I asked for him and we talked, and he agreed to coach me on doing a home meeting and showing the plan.
“But isn’t this supposed to be an online company?” was what I asked him. “Well it is, they can order their products online and it gets delivered to them“, was his reply.
That’s not what the plan showed, but “whatever” I thought and I went to his house, invited a few people (about 7 of them showed up), and then I understood what it took to build that business.
In our private talk after the meeting I asked him why he answered the phone like it’s a business and he said that’s what it takes. And he went to explain that he spends between 6 and 7 hours on the phone every day, and about he said that if I follow his example, I could get rich in 3 or 4 years, I was done.
Over the years, I can honestly say that that one event changed my outlook on the MLM and network marketing industry, and 16 years later, after hopping in and out of a few opportunities, I’m finding my success in this opportunity.
And this brings me to what I want to talk about right now, and I’ll move quickly through this.
Down and Dirty Marketing Secrets Revealed
What does it really take to make money quickly in any business?
In a nutshell, it takes three things.
- A Way to Get Paid Quickly: When I stopped to think that I’d have to spend 3 or 4 more years working a regular job and spending all of my time hanging out at pumps, walking the streets for prospects, being on the phone for 6 or 7 hours a day, doing home meetings, and turning my home into a distribution system…
First, there weren’t enough house in the day. 6 or 7 hours on the phone? I’d have to quit my regular job just to do that.
And second, it took me 3 months to get paid. I couldn’t quit my job and not get paid for three months. It took a long time to get paid.
So the first thing you need is a system that pays quickly.
- A Model That Supports Part Time Workers: Recently I learned that in the MLM/Network Marketing industry, around 85% of people are part time.
Meaning, like me people were working full time jobs and building on the side in their free time, with the goal of making some extra money or replacing their income.
You just can’t have a model that only works for people who work it full time.
- A System That Doesn’t Need Extensive Set Up or A Lot of Work To Get Started: In many of the businesses I entered, a lot of them required a lot of work and technical set up, and to be honest, as an engineer and programmer I had an advantage because it was not a big deal.
But I found that a lot of my time was spent helping others set up hosting, and muddle through complicated settings, and dealing with code and all sorts of things, and I know a lot of people personally that quit because they couldn’t get through the “techie” stuff or follow complicated instructions.
So you need a system that is uncomplicated and doesn’t require a lot of work.
And in all honesty, for a lot of people, the reasons why they aren’t making money in their business isn’t their fault. It’s that the system isn’t geared to make money quickly, doesn’t cater to part time workers, or it’s just too complicated – too many hoops to jump through.
And a big fourth one would be that it is a pyramid structure, which there isn’t anything wrong with that per say, unless you wanted to get rich quickly.
A pyramid by the way is in everything, where the people at the top make the most money off of the collective work of the few.
Jobs today are pyramids. You have a lot of employees at the bottom making a little bit of money, supervisors above them making a little bit more, managers above them making a little more money, and at the top you have the executives making the lion’s share.
In politics we call it ‘top down economics’ where the wealthy receive the tax breaks and the benefits and that’s supposed to trickle down to the middle class.
If we’re going to be honest, it’s not something that’s exclusive to the network marketing industry, and it works.
However, if you want to make money quickly you need a system that’s built for it – you need direct response marketing and not network marketing.
Whats the difference between direct response marketing and network marketing?
My mother had a saying. “While the grass is growing, the horse is starving.”
What she meant was that it takes time and hard work to build a network marketing, MLM organization, but in the meanwhile you need to make money RIGHT NOW to feed yourself and keep the lights on.
In other words, cash flow.
Direct Response Marketing let’s you get paid quickly, usually weekly or bi-weekly, while you’re building your organization.
So a fifth thing to add would be, you need a model that pays both passive income and fast cash flow, because you need something to bring money in the door so you can cover your expenses like marketing and education.
Skills take time to develop, so you can’t wait for 3 months, 6 months, a year… or in the case I was looking at, 3 or 4 years to start making decent money.
But The Real Secret To Making Fast Money, And As Much Money As You Want In ANY Business?
Once you have the system in place, and you’re working hard and you’re getting results from that system, there are two things that are a MUST if you want to grow your business rapidly.
- Education: Invest 10% of your income back into your education. Read success and person development books, study marketing strategies. Become a student of marketing and continually improve yourself
In a recent article I talked about how leadership ability has a multiplying effect on your business. You’ll be surprised at how fast your organization grows when you grow personally as well as in skill-set.
- Marketing: Take 20% of your gross income “generated from your business” and re-invest it back into marketing.
Once you become a student of marketing, take some of your profits and start trying out things to see what works and what doesn’t.
It’s important that it’s money generated by your business, because you really don’t want to spend money out of pocket. In the pool hall we tell people don’t gamble with “scared” money.
That’s your personal income that would go for bills and gas and things you actually need, so it behooves you to get your business generating cash, and BEFORE you pay anything, set aside 20% to re-invest in marketing.
That’s how you learn where to spend your money to get maximum effect, where not to spend it, and as you learn what works and what doesn’t, and focus on the things that do, you’ll see your business explode.
And that ladies and gentlemen is how you make as much money as you want, as fast as you want from any business; those are down and dirty marketing secrets revealed…
